Amnesty International report on the Philippines

Amnesty International has released a report on the Philippines, “Political Killings, Human Rights and the Peace Process“. Among other recommendations, Amnesty “urges the Government of the Philippines, in responding to the recommendations of the Human Rights Committee, to access the expertise of relevant UN special mechanisms by inviting the Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions, the Special Representative on Human Rights Defenders, and representatives of the Working Group on Arbitrary Detention to visit the Philippines.”

Statement of the Sri Lanka Co-Chairs

The Sri Lanka Co-Chairs issued a statement calling, among other things, for “independent, international investigations of allegations of serious human rights abuses, including the murder of 17 Sri Lankans working for a French NGO and the alleged killing of 100 Muslims.”

A Public Meeting on Sri Lanka, Peace, Human Rights and the Diaspora (London, August 5)

At a public meeting sponsored by Amnesty International and Human Rights Watch, Philip Alston will discuss the constructive role that could be played by the diaspora in promoting respect for human rights. At this meeting, he will also released a Tamil translation of his report on a fact-finding mission to Sri Lanka.

About the Project

The Project on Extrajudicial Executions was established by Philip Alston to support his work as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on Extrajudicial Executions. His mandate from the United Nations is to respond effectively to cases of extrajudicial killings around the world.

The Project is directed by William Abresch and is part of the Center for Human Rights and Global Justice at the New York University School of Law.
