UN Special Rapporteur mission to Ecuador

On 5 July 2010, UN Special Rapporteur Philip Alston began a 10 day mission to Ecuador to investigate allegations of unlawful killings. The Special Rapporteur is visiting the country at the invitation of the Government of Ecuador, and is focusing on allegations of killings by hired killers, hit squads, the police, military, and rural juntas; as well as prison deaths, mob justice, and death threats, especially against social movement, indigenous, and union activists. The Special Rapporteur will also investigate allegations of deaths resulting from the application of indigenous justice. His mission will include assessing whether perpetrators of unlawful killings are brought to justice, and the outcomes of Ecuador's Truth Commission. This is the first mission to Ecuador by an independent expert mandated by the UN
Human Rights Council to monitor extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions.

The Special Rapporteur will issue his preliminary conclusions and recommendations at a press conference in Quito, Ecuador on 15 July 2010. The preliminary report will be posted here upon its release. For press or other inquiries related to the mission, please contact sarah.knuckey@nyu.edu.
